Travis White began his career
as a mountain climbing bum. Upon graduating from university in 1971,
he immediately headed to South America, ultimately spending three
years in Ecuador. His climbs included several virgin routes as well
as a month spent in the Llanganati mountains looking for a lost
Inca treasure. He also taught at the Catholic University in Quito.
Along the way, he picked up near-fluent Spanish, a smattering of
Quechua, and a keen appreciation for South American cultures.
Looking for more gainful employment, Travis finally
settled on academia. He moved to the mountains of North America
and studied information science, research methods, and statistics
at the University of Denver. Ultimately, he earned both a Master's
degree and a Ph.D. He also taught seminars and short courses on
information science in various institutions in Central and South
America. In 1980, he spent the year teaching information science
at the University of Guanajuato in Mexico.
In 1983, now married and with a child on the way,
Travis decided to get a real job. He started by teaching courses
on the UNIX operating system at NBI, Inc. a leading office automation
company in Boulder, Colorado. Travis quickly moved into product
marketing, where he helped manage projects related to UNIX servers,
as well as structured and unstructured databases. He was a frequent
speaker for the company at technology expositions and seminars.
In 1988, Travis moved to Solbourne Computer in
Longmont, Colorado. The idea behind Solbourne was to marry the best
of American computer design with the best of Japanese manufacturing.
Venture funding was supplied by Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.
of Osaka, Japan. Solbourne designed multi-processing UNIX servers
based on the SPARC architecture and SunOS (now Solaris). Matsushita
manufactured the products in Osaka. Travis spent nearly five years
with the company in a variety of product marketing positions. In
1991, he became the company's Marketing Vice President.
In 1993, Travis joined J.D. Edwards, a leading
enterprise software vendor in Denver, Colorado. Travis has held
a number of positions, including Director of Corporate Communications
and Vice President of Product Strategies. In 1999, he was transferred
to Paris where he served as Vice President of Marketing for Europe,
Middle East and Africa. In 2001, Travis returned to Denver to become
the company's Vice President of Strategic Planning.
Travis lives in Denver, Colorado and continues
to enjoy outdoor sports, including mountain climbing. He and his
wife, Suellen, have a teenage son, Elliot, who shows every evidence
of developing into a mountain climbing bum.
