THE GROWING INTEREST IN ERP
Cambashi to produce quarterly updates to original, highly successful
report on ERP systems
CBS.16
Issue 1 01/04/98
Cambashi, the UK's analyst
of the market for IT in industry, is to produce quarterly bulletins
that will review the leading Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
systems and help manufacturers to choose the ones that most closely
match their requirements.
The bulletins extend the range
of Cambashi's original report, "Ovum evaluates ERP for manufacturers",
published in June 1997 by Ovum, the independent IT analyst group.
They will be a invaluable aid to potential ERP buyers, and also
to vendors and management consultants involved in promoting and
implementing ERP technology. The initial subscription will cost
£1,500, with annual payments of £500 thereafter.
"Ovum evaluates ERP for manufacturers"
resulted from more than a year's research by Cambashi and its partners
in CATN, the European IT consultancy network. It investigated eight
leading ERP systems, including BPCS, Mapics, Mfg/pro, Oracle applications,
Prism, SAP R/3, System 21 and Baan IV. It focused on three key facets
of each system: the vendor, the product itself, and users' experiences.
Detailed procurement and implementation guidelines were offered
to help future ERP buyers select the systems that best suited their
requirements.
The success of the initial report
has led Ovum to appoint Cambashi to produce the quarterly bulletins,
each of which will investigate a further three or four ERP systems.
The term "ERP" covers a range of systems and technologies which
aim to integrate accounts, information technology and manufacturing
in a single environment which optimises information flow and availability.
Whereas, until recently and largely for reasons associated with
price and implementation times, it was seen as the province of only
the largest companies, the technology is now being adopted more
widely by medium and even small sized enterprises.
Cambashi's reports help prospective
buyers to identify their requirements and provide benchmarks for
comparing invitations to tender. The key objectives are for the
selection and implementation of an ERP system to be driven by the
needs of the business. Vendors can then be judged on their ability
to deliver solutions that satisfy those needs, rather than on more
arbitrary, vendor-driven criteria.
